Wenlock Priory

History

The priory's origins lie in an earlier Anglo-Saxon monastery on the same site, which was refounded as a Cluniac house following the Norman Conquest. The Cluniac movement spread across England from Burgundy and the priory grew into one of the more significant monastic establishments in the Welsh Marches before its dissolution in the sixteenth century under Henry VIII. The ruins passed through various hands after the Dissolution and have been in the care of the state for much of the modern period.

Architecture

The chapter house retains an exceptional run of interlaced Norman arcading, richly carved and largely intact despite centuries of exposure. The priory church nave survives as a substantial roofless shell, giving a clear sense of the building's original scale.

Gardens & grounds

The grounds around the ruins are kept as open grass, with the sculpted stonework set against a backdrop that makes the scale of the former complex easy to read.
