About this place
Cast in 1779, the Iron Bridge spans the River Severn at Ironbridge, near Coalbrookdale in Shropshire, and was the first cast-iron bridge in the world.
It opened to traffic in 1781 and gave the surrounding Ironbridge Gorge both its name and its place in industrial history.
The tollhouse at the southern end still stands and is open to visitors seasonally.
English Heritage acts as guardian of the bridge structure itself, which is owned by Telford and Wrekin Council, while the tollhouse and broader museum sites are now managed by the National Trust following a transfer in 2026.
