Blackness Castle

History

The castle was built in the 15th century by the Crichton family, one of the most powerful noble families in Scotland at the time. After the Crichtons fell from favour, it passed into royal hands and was used for centuries as a state prison, holding political and religious prisoners including Covenanters. It later served military purposes into the modern era before coming into state care.

Architecture

The castle's elongated plan, with a pointed prow-like structure at one end and a tall tower at the other, gives it the profile of a stone ship run aground on the Forth shore. Its curtain walls and multiple towers reflect its long use as an artillery fortress rather than a domestic residence.

Worth knowing

Blackness Castle has appeared on screen in Outlander, Mary Queen of Scots and Outlaw King, drawing visitors keen to see its filming locations firsthand. For much of its history it functioned less as a home and more as a prison, holding state and religious captives over several centuries.
