About this place
Founded in 1131, Tintern Abbey was the first Cistercian monastery to be established in Wales.
The ruins stand in the Wye Valley in Monmouthshire, and much of the structure survives to a remarkable height despite centuries of abandonment.
Cadw manages the site, and membership gives free access.
Wordsworth visited twice and wrote one of his most celebrated poems here.
Turner also painted the abbey, and his work played a significant part in shaping Romantic interest in the Welsh landscape.
