About this place
Stowe House is one of the grandest Palladian mansions in England, standing in Buckinghamshire.
The core of the house was built in the late seventeenth century by Sir Richard Temple, 3rd Baronet, and then extensively rebuilt and expanded throughout the eighteenth century by successive members of the Temple and Grenville families.
The south façade alone stretches over 460 feet, and the full extent of the house including its wings exceeds 900 feet.
Stowe School has occupied the building since 1923.
The surrounding landscape gardens are cared for by the National Trust and are open to visitors separately from the house.
