About this place
Standen is an 1890s Arts and Crafts house south of East Grinstead in West Sussex, designed by Philip Webb for a solicitor's family.
It holds one of the most complete Morris & Co.
interiors in England, with original wallpapers, curtains, and carpets still in the rooms for which they were chosen.
The National Trust has cared for the property since the Beale family gave it up, and it is Grade I listed.

James Beale, a solicitor, commissioned the house as a family country retreat. Philip Webb, a close associate of William Morris, designed it with the existing farmstead incorporated rather than cleared, which is why the property retains an unusually layered quality on approach. The Beale family used Standen for several decades before it passed to the National Trust.
Architecture
Philip Webb designed Standen in a manner characteristic of the Arts and Crafts movement, drawing on vernacular Sussex building traditions. The exterior combines tile-hanging and brick alongside other local materials, reflecting Webb's preference for regional building over stylistic uniformity.
Worth knowing
The Morris & Co. collection at Standen is among the most intact surviving examples of the firm's domestic work. Wallpapers, curtains, and carpets designed by William Morris remain in the rooms for which they were chosen, giving the house a coherence that later curated collections rarely match.
Gardens & grounds
The hillside gardens at Standen offer long views across the Weald and include a series of distinct areas that complement the house's Arts and Crafts character.
