About this place
Ragley Hall stands in the parish of Arrow in Warwickshire, a few miles south of Alcester and about eight miles from Stratford-upon-Avon.
It has been the ancestral seat of the Seymour-Conway family, Marquesses of Hertford, since the house was begun in the late 17th century.
The hall is regarded as one of England's earliest Palladian country houses.
As of 2026 the house itself is closed to general visitors except for weddings and filming, though the surrounding park runs a fuller programme of public events.

Building began around 1680 to a design by Robert Hooke, the scientist and architect, but remained unfinished at Lord Conway's death in 1683 and was not completed until the mid-18th century. James Gibbs added baroque plasterwork in the Great Hall around 1750-56. James Wyatt added the large pedimented portico between 1778 and 1783, and later remodelled several of the state rooms in a Neoclassical style. The Seymour-Conway family, who hold the title Marquess of Hertford, have owned the estate continuously since it was begun.
Architecture
The hall is an early and influential example of English Palladian design, built in brick with stone dressings. A giant portico was added in the late 18th century and grand Neoclassical interiors follow, both by James Wyatt.
Worth knowing
The house is used today as a filming location and wedding venue, a role that has largely replaced its former life as a regularly open stately home.
