About this place

Broughton Hall stands on the Broughton Hall Estate near Skipton, in the Yorkshire Dales.

Today it operates as Broughton Sanctuary, a private house offering stays, weddings and corporate retreats across its grounds and moorland.

The estate includes a wellbeing centre called Avalon and a nature recovery project spanning ancient woodland and river valleys.

Historic Houses members should note that entry here is not free, unlike at many of the network's other properties.

History

The estate was established in 1097 and has been held by the Tempest family for over 900 years, across 32 recorded generations. It has more recently been reimagined as Broughton Sanctuary, combining its historic fabric with a modern focus on nature recovery and wellbeing.

Worth knowing

The estate has been used as a filming location, and its grounds now host an established wellbeing retreat centre called Avalon.

Gardens & grounds

The wider estate includes heather moorland, ancient woodland, meadow pasture and river valleys managed as part of a nature recovery project.
