History

Charlotte Smith, the poet and novelist who lived from 1749 to 1806, spent her childhood at Bignor Park. The estate was her family seat, and the landscape of the South Downs that surrounded it became a lasting influence on her writing. She is now recognised as a significant figure in the development of Romantic poetry, with some scholars crediting her influence on Wordsworth and Coleridge. The property has remained in private hands throughout its history.

Architecture

The house is a Grade II listed building. A Greek Loggia survives within the grounds, an uncommon feature for a country estate of this scale in West Sussex.
