Charlotte Smith, the poet and novelist who lived from 1749 to 1806, spent her childhood at Bignor Park. She is now recognised as a significant figure in the development of Romantic poetry, with some scholars crediting her influence on Wordsworth and Coleridge. The property has remained in private hands throughout its history.
