Arley Hall

History

An earlier house stood on the site before Rowland Egerton-Warburton commissioned local architect George Latham to rebuild it between 1832 and 1845. A Gothic Revival chapel by Anthony Salvin was added soon after and is separately listed Grade II*. The family has held Arley since the fifteenth century. By the mid-twentieth century, parts of the original hall had fallen into disrepair and were demolished, later replaced with five private houses built to match the original style.

Architecture

The hall is built in the Jacobethan style, a Victorian revival of Elizabethan forms, and is Grade II* listed alongside its adjoining chapel. A cruck barn in the grounds survives as a Grade I listed structure, among the oldest buildings on the estate.

Gardens & grounds

The gardens, developed from the 1830s onward, include what is considered the first double herbaceous border in England, along with a walled garden and woodland walk.
